Skat Glossary


Grand : Game type in which only the Jacks are trump.
Null : Game type in which the soloist loses when winning a trick.
Skat : The two face down cards in the middle after dealing. Also the name of the game.
fat, full, or high cards : Aces and 10s.
finesse : Stay below a played card to capture a higher-valued card later (most often a 10).
hand : Game type attribute: the soloist does not pick up the Skat; adds 1 to multiplier. Also: the cards you are holding.
low cards : 7s, 8s, 9s.
open: (also French “ouvert”) Game type attribute: the soloist lays down his cards prior to the first lead and plays openly.
schneider : (German for "tailor"; pronounced "shnyder" ending like "cider") Win level: at most 30 card points made in a trump-game; adds 1 to multiplier.
schwarz : (German for "black"; pronounced "shvarts" ending like "darts") Win level: no tricks made in a trump-game; adds 2 to multiplier because schwarz implies schneider.
slough : Play a non-trump card when you cannot follow suit.
smear, feed : Play a high-valued card when you cannot follow suit (often a 10 or Ace) and your partner gets the trick.
