About highly dubious playing decisions

2010 Canadian championships

Well guys.I must be getting old.The old saying no guts no glory. Finally applies to me too.
5th round at the Canadian championships,1st table position 4.leading my table by about 300pts.My last hand and then I deal, game over I am Canadian champ.this is my last hand. :c7 :c8 :c9 :cq :c10 :da :d10 :dk :hk : :s10
Do you play clubs without 5 in that position?
I normally bid this hand to 36 without hesitation.but in my head I thought I could loose a null if all went bad and still be champ.so I bid 23 pass. :h10 :hj was in the skat.OK
Player 1 getts the game and turns his null into a grand with 3 schnieder, and the next hand I deal him another grand with 3.I just blow the canadian championship,to make things worst ,a player from table 2 beats me by 16 pts and a player from table 3 beats me by 20pts and from table 6 another guy passes me by 40pts.A True story of NO GUTS NO GLORY.
I have lost a couple of tournaments, because I was too aggressive ,but this was the first that I lost because I didn't play a Playable hand.Next time I'd rather loose going out with a blaze of glory.

Ron,

That's a bummer--I had no idea all of that was going on at Table 1. I generally go to 36 with that hand, too, but I've never been that high at the end of a tournament, and I probably would have gotten conservative, too.

As it was, I was sitting at Table 14 trying to get myself on the prize list in my very first KM coming back from about 100 points off the pace. I had Rosie (last year's winner) on my right and was having a tough game. About 2/3 down the list then in Rearhand, I win the bid at 18 with one of those scary hands with no jacks and six full ones. You feel you will anger the Skat gods if you don’t at least take this to 23:

:c10 :ck :sa :s10 :sq :ha :h10 :h9 :d10 :d7

Forehand accepts my 18, then passes. What awaits in the Skat? Yuk,

:c7 :d9

Gee, that gives me three of everything (except jacks). And, swell, only two aces. I put under

:c10 :d10

I knew Forehand had diamonds, so I did not want to risk an expensive Grand w/o 4 and have the opening lead be the ace of Diamonds. Instead, I played Diamonds w/o 5 with the ten of trump laid away. Forehand then led clubs, and I won the second trick with my K. I won the game with 64 points. Forehand had the Ace of Diamonds and two others, so I likely would lose the Grand. Turns out I needed to bid this hand, play it just like this and win it in order to sneak onto the prize list (39th overall). A small victory, but for where I am in my Skat play, I'll take it! :)
